UK Clears Asylum Backlog, Reduces Migrant Hotel Use
New data from the Home Office for 2025 has shown that, despite a 4% fall in total claims (or around 100,625), there has been a 13% increase in small boat crossings, which now exceed 41,000. The number of illegal migrants arriving via lorries has fallen significantly, although a large proportion of claims come from those already in the UK with legal visas. The government has also managed to reduce the backlog of asylum claims, which has fallen to its lowest since 2020, and has reduced hotel costs for migrants by 19%. In addition, visas for those dependent on work and students have fallen significantly following policy changes.
